John Elway endorses Mitt Romney

DENVER — President Barack Obama’s challenger drew a heavy hitter to his rally in Denver Monday night. That would be the Denver Broncos’ John Elway.

“Tonight, I get the opportunity to introduce to you the next President of the United States, governor Mitt Romney,” the two-time Super Bowl champion boomed out in his famous raspy baritone.

At Romney’s rally at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Lowry, Elway continued to call Romney a “proven leader with the experience and background to turn around our struggling economy.”

“America needs a comeback team,” Elway, a veteran of many a fourth quarter comeback, said. “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are that team.”

Our Eli Stokols capitalized on that rhetoric from Elway, using it as a lead-in to a question you wanted answered.

Your Questions Answered: Watch Mitt Romney’s exclusive pre-debate interview on FOX31

DENVER — Down in most polls and running out of time, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is looking at Wednesday night’s debate here at the University of Denver as perhaps his last, best chance of convincing the American people that he should be the country’s next president.

On Monday night, just prior to a rally at Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, Romney will sit down with FOX31 Denver for his last television interview before what many observers are calling the most important night of his political life.

L.A. bridge unexpectedly collapses during ‘Carmageddon II’ construction

Los Angeles (CNN) — A massive Southern California highway project dubbed “Carmageddon II” saw an unscripted moment when a section of a bridge unexpectedly collapsed, narrowly missing construction crews, officials said.

A portion of the famed 50-year-old Mulholland Drive Bridge — a fixture in the Los Angeles freeway-scape — came down Saturday as workers were demolishing another part of it.

“On an operation of this size, of this magnitude, pieces come down of all different sizes and shapes,” Dan Kulka of Kiewit Construction told CNN affiliate KABC. “We did not anticipate this, although it’s not unusual for a big piece to come down like that.”

The bridge collapse is not expected to delay the scheduled reopening early Monday morning of a 10-mile section of Interstate 405, one of the nation’s busiest freeways.

Bullied Michigan teen nominated as prank, shines as homecoming princess

West Branch, Michigan (CNN) — Whitney Kropp, the teen thrust into the spotlight after her peers nominated her for the school homecoming court as a prank, attended coronation Friday night surrounded by cheering fans.

Donning a red dress, she beamed as she clutched a bouquet of flowers.

“I had thoughts about not coming [still tonight],” the 16-year-old told reporters after halftime of the homecoming game.

“I just thought maybe I won’t have fun, but … I’m having actually a lot of fun right now.”

“I’m so happy — this is so much right now for me,” she added.

Speaking to reporters after the halftime ceremonies, Kropp had nothing but praise for her school — in spite of what a select few students did.

“The school is fantastic. They treated me so well here and I couldn’t ask for more.”

Her mother, Bernice Kropp, was all smiles.

DIA to implement new plane-tracking technology

DENVER — Denver International Airport is expected to start using a GPS-like tracking system for planes on airport grounds.

It will be the nation’s seventh airport to use the new browser-based technology.

According to the Denver Post, the system called Sensis Aerobahn will be implemented on Monday in order to cut costs and increase the efficiency and safety of every phase of movement on DIA’s airport runways, ramps and gate areas.

The Federal Aviation Administration monitors air traffic on runways during takeoff and landing, and ramp-tower operators oversee traffic when planes are in ramp and gate areas.

New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger dies at 86

New York (CNN) — Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, the influential publisher who transformed The New York Times in his long tenure, has died at age 86, the newspaper reported Saturday.

Sulzberger died Saturday at his home in Southampton, New York, after a long illness, the paper said, citing his family.

He started in 1963 as both publisher of the paper and chairman and chief executive of The New York Times Company. He left the publisher’s job in 1992 and the chief executive’s job in 1997, handing both reins to his son, the paper reported.

The Sulzberger family has helmed the paper since 1896, when it was bought by Adolph Ochs, Sulzberger’s grandfather.

With the family having such a long history at the Times, some staffers felt like part of the family, too.

Former SEAL runs marathon after surviving cancer, double lung transplant

(CNN) — Justin Legg could dead-lift a washing machine and carry it across the street. He could swim miles on end and run a marathon on one day’s notice.

The former Navy SEAL stayed in top shape because his life — and the lives of his teammates — depended on it.

But when his physical strength deteriorated in a fight against cancer, Legg had to rely on his mental fortitude to carry him through four years of excruciating pain, a bone marrow transplant and two collapsed lungs.

Finally back on his feet, Legg now has a new mission. He’s relearning to run, one step at a time, in honor of the 19-year-old boy who saved his life.

Newlywed nightmare

The pain started in his ribs. Legg brushed it off, figuring a martial arts fight had gotten the best of him.
