Police warn against unattended running vehicles or “Puffers”

The Lakewood Police Department and the Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force (MATT) are reminding citizens to not leave vehicles running and unattended this winter.

As we begin to experience a drop in temperatures and potential snowfall in the coming weeks, residents will be tempted to leave an unattended running vehicle in an attempt to warm it before driving.

Cold weather bursts pipes; keeps Colo. plumbers busy

DENVER -- Colorado plumbing companies were inundated with calls this weekend from residents whose pipes burst.

Master Plumber David Bright with Applewood Plumbing Heating and Electric says his company got hundreds of calls each day.

Rosie Malinovskii was one of them. "I think I'm lucky I got somebody over here," she said. She says she woke up on New Year's Day and had no water. She knew her pipes were frozen. She says a few hours later she heard the water dripping from the ceiling in the basement.

Luckily she knew where her emergency shut-off switch was, and shut off the water right away. David Bright had to cut out some dry wall to find the broken pipe.

He says it's a good thing Rosie was home and able to shut off the water, otherwise the flood could have been much worse. Repairs can cost anywhere from $300 to tens of thousands of dollars.

Free flu shots available for children

DENVER -- Doctor's say this is the time of year when children start to get the sniffles and coughs, but it isn't too late to protect your children from the flu.

Doctors say school aged children are particularly at risk of getting the flu.

The Med-Express Urgent Care is offering free flu shots to any child age 4 to 18 through Jan. 15.

"It's a walk in basis, and we are very good at getting our patients in and out. The flu vaccine probability takes 10 minutes from the time they step in and until they are walking out," Medical Director Mark Montano said.

Med-express Urgent Care is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with no appointment needed.

They have locations in Cherry Creek, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Northglenn, Parker and south Aurora.
