SUV crashes into light pole, kills driver

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The driver of an SUV was killed Monday when his vehicle went out of control and crashed into a light pole in Lakewood.

Police investigators say 37-year-old Alamo Onak of Littleton was killed in the crash at 3:40 a.m. at S. Kipling Pkwy. and W. Girton Dr. They say his 2001 Chevrolet Blazer was southbound on Kipling when it hit the raised crosswalk median on the northwest corner.

The SUV then went across the intersection and crashed head-on into a light pole.

Onak was the only person in the Blazer. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Detectives will wait for toxicology reports to determine if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

470 Beltway closer to reality

BOULDER, Colo. -- A vote by Boulder County officials on December 21st could allow for the construction of the final 20-mile stretch of the 470 beltway around the Denver metro area.

“We have maps from 42 years ago, when folks first talked about building a super highway link around the metro area,” said Will Toor, Boulder County Commissioner. “We have always opposed the beltway in our county because we were afraid we’d lose open space along highway 93. But with an agreement between Jefferson and Boulder counties now in place, we are ready to end our opposition.”

The key to the deal is Rocky Flats Parcel 16, a 640-acre plot of land where highways 93 and 72 intersect at the southwest edge of the new Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge.
