Comcast to announce Internet initiative aimed at Colo. low-income families

Comcast is announcing a program aimed at providing low-income families in Colorado with Internet access and laptops at reduced prices.

Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock will be at Denver's South High School Wednesday morning to talk about the program. It would allow families with children who qualify for free school lunch to have Internet at $10 per month and laptops for $150.

The program called Internet Essentials will also provide free digital literacy classes to the families.

A rabid bat was discovered at Drake Middle School in Arvada, Monday, August 15, 2011.  The bat was discovered in an empty classroom by a teacher preparing for the start of school.  The teacher, following proper procedure, immediately closed the door and went to inform the onsite school resource officer, who then called Animal Control.  The bat later tested positive for rabies making it the fifth in the county this season.

 Comcast is offering low-cost Internet access for children living in poverty who qualify for free school lunches.

Spokeswoman Cindy Parsons says the company wants to help families keep up with their school work.
