Boy, 5, was shot and killed by his 3-year-old brother | News
LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A 5-year-old boy was shot and killed by his 3-year-old brother early Friday morning, FOX31 has confirmed.
The man who was supposed to be watching them, 23-year-old Adam Laham, has been arrested for the boy's death.
"I barely heard the gunshot, but I heard screaming," said neighbor Rachel Mendez. "I ran out and saw all the cops and the ambulance take the little 5-year-old boy away."
Neighbor Jill Johnson heard the gunshot while she was walking her dog.
"All of a sudden I heard this big boom and I wasn't really sure what it was," Johnson said. "Then I heard one of the parents yell "Oh, my god," and then I heard the kid screaming."
Both the neighbors say the victim was always around with his family and friends, and the boy was playing with the other kids outside in the snow on Thursday.
"They were throwing snowballs and trying to build a snowman," Johnson said. "They were just as happy as could be."
Laham was visiting from Kansas and was supervising the children when the accident occurred. He will be charged with child abuse resulting in death and criminal negligence.
"It's just two days before Christmas. I can't imagine what they family is going through," Johnson said.
The shooting happened just before 10 a.m. Friday at the Eagle Crest Apartments in Lakewood.
Police say the shooting was accidental.
The boy was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident occurred in the 1600 block of Iris St. in Lakewood.
