Expect DUI roadblocks, increased patrols through weekend
News

The “100 Days of Heat” DUI crackdown campaign continues this holiday with statewide law enforcement looking for drunk drivers in an effort to keep roadways safe.

Roadblocks are being set up along state highways and local streets to stop drivers randomly.

“The (campaign) is in full effect, and there will be officers throughout the state and here in Lakewood looking for drunk drivers and not showing much mercy for them,” warns Officer Steven Hipwell of the Lakewood Police Department.

Police say many people don’t realize that even two drinks can turn them into dangerous drivers.

“You could easily be involved in an accident, your reaction times are not as sharp and your driving skills aren’t as sharp,” says Hipwell.

Last year, the federally-funded “100 Days of Heat” campaign netted 551 arrests in Colorado.

A first drunk driving arrest can cost you more than $10,000.

Police encourage partiers to always choose a designated driver who vows not to drink alcohol or choose to use public transportation to keep things safe.
