Regis University president to retire

Rev. Michael Sheeran announced Tuesday he’ll retire as president of Regis University in the summer of 2012.

Sheeran, who’s headed Colorado’s only Jesuit Catholic university since January 1993, first joined Regis in 1975 as assistant professor of history and political science. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1970.

Jeffco Public Schools third-graders improve on state reading test

Jeffco Public Schools third-graders improved from last year on the state reading test.

The unofficial results of the 2011 Colorado State Assessment program (CSAP) for third-grade reading were released on Tuesday, May 10. 

Jeffco’s young readers’ scores increased this year to 80 percent in the “Advanced Proficient” category up 4 points from last year. This is 13 percentage points higher than the state average in the “Advanced/Proficient” category.

Sheriff’s Office Youth Academy starting in June

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the 2011 Youth Academy. This free academy is for young people between the ages of 14 and 20, and offers them a peek inside their local law enforcement agency.

This is a fun-filled, week long academy with class topics and interactive activities including, SWAT, DUI simulations, K-9, patrol procedures, crime scene investigations, arrest control, and jail operations. Students will also participate in hands-on “shooting” at the indoor laser firing range.

The City of Lakewood will observe Arbor Day this year at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 29. City Council member Tom Quinn will read an Arbor Day Proclamation to start the festivities, and he and 32 students and two teachers from Eiber Elementary School will plant 11 trees in the community within the Lakewood Green Homeowners Association area at 8528 W. 10th Ave. (10th and Cody Street).

Video lottery for higher education considered in Colorado

DENVER -- Video lottery terminals at Colorado horse racing tracks is up for debate in the state Senate as lawmakers look for ways to ease budget cuts for education.

Senate Bill 233 would allow video lottery terminals at two horse tracks, with the proceeds going to higher education. There is no official estimate from the state how much the gambling terminals could raise, but lawmakers say the video lottery could revive colleges hurt by recent budget cuts.

Daily exercise may soon be required in Colo. elementary schools

A proposal to require 30 minutes of daily physical activity for Colorado elementary students is headed to the governor.

The House gave final approval Tuesday to a measure directing school districts to make sure students are getting daily exercise. That can include recess, physical education classes, or field trips.

It wasn't immediately known whether Gov.John Hickenlooper would sign House Bill 1069.
