Take precautions when purchasing firewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- As the state prepares for another cold winter, many Coloradans may turn to the use of firewood as an alternative means of heating their homes.  The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) strongly recommends purchasing firewood from a reputable dealer. 

“The buyer should obtain the seller's name and business address,” said Nick Brechun, CDA’s Measurement Standards Program Administrator.  “Bulk firewood sellers in Colorado must provide a receipt with this information as well as the price, amount, and type of wood.”

Better Business Bureau: Don't let layaway ruin your day

DENVER -- Layaway has become increasingly popular with the challenging economic times. Many find it very helpful during the holidays to be able to space out payments. However, putting an item on layaway may result in a loss of money or the item itself if you don’t read the contract carefully.

Better Business Bureaus around the country have received complaints in the last year from consumers whose layaway purchase did not turn out the way they anticipated. 

2010 Annual Juried Holiday Show and Sale kicks off in November

LAKEWOOD, Colo.- The 2010 Annual Juried Holiday Show & Sale, in conjunction with the Artisan Showcase, will feature more than 100 Colorado artists at the Lakewood Cultural Center from November 19 through December 23.  The Holiday Show captures the spirit of gift-giving with a large variety of work and price ranges along with great customer service provided by cheerful volunteers.  Choose from holiday items, paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, and much more.

Young farmer's market in Lakewood sells locally grown produce

People can shop for locally grown produce at Bear Creek K-8 Elementary School's Young Farmer's Market. From 2:30 to 4 p.m., on alternating Thursdays, the school will host a market organized by the parent volunteers. It will be open on Sept. 23, 30 and Oct.14 at 9601 Dartmouth Place.

The organically grown fruits and vegetables were harvested from the school's garden as well as from local Colorado farms. All proceeds go to the Seed to Table School Garden Program at Bear Creek K-8. For more information, e-mail Valerie McCoy at mcriddles@q.com.

Lakewood-based business to donate to non-profits

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Lakewood-based Office Liquidators will give away more than $25,000 worth of used and refurbished office furniture Aug. 25 to the first representatives of Colorado non-profit organizations who show up at the door.

U.S. Mail services and products now available at local Office Depot stores

Besides local Post Offices and postal contract stations, residential and business customers can now go to Office Depot stores for select U.S. package shipping services and stamps. Those stores include 40 Office Depot locations in Colorado.

U.S. Postal Service shipping services and mailing products now available at these Office Depot stores include Priority and Express Mail service, Parcel Post service, Delivery Confirmation service, Signature Confirmation service, and regular First Class U.S. postage stamps.In addition, free Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes are available.
